- Smith called his rival ‘Bambi on ice’, but Eubank called the KO a ‘one hit wonder’
Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr were involved in a war of words ahead of their rematch next month as ‘Beefy’ dubbed his rival ‘deluded’ after claiming he was ‘dominating’ their fight before suffering a shock stoppage.
Eubank Jr was stopped for the first time in his career in the pair’s grudge match earlier this year as he was knocked to the canvas twice by a flurry of punches from Smith in the fourth round before the referee waved off the contest.
The pair will come head to head again on September 2 at the Manchester Arena with ‘Next Gen’ looking to prove his point that he was hit with a ‘one-hit wonder’ – a claim that was met with disbelief by Smith.
Eubank – who previously claimed an elbow played a part in his stoppage – insisted he was in charge of the fight, citing an impressive spell at the end of round three. That led to Smith calling him ‘deluded’ as they snapped back at each other.
‘I was complacent after the third round of success, I guess maybe I got a little bit too comfortable and paid the price,’ said Eubank.

Smith called Eubank ‘deluded’ after his rival added he was caught by a ‘one-hit wonder’
‘He did what he did. He caught me and the fight was over. And now we’re here, we’re back in fight mode and ready to set the record straight.’
Smith hit back: ‘Are you really that deluded that you’re drawing on that twenty second period at the end of round three – are you really drawing on that for some confidence?’
‘It wasn’t about round three,’ Eubank replied. ‘It was the fact that you didn’t touch me for three rounds.
‘Why are you the only man to say that?’ Smith said. ‘Why are you the only man to believe you were dominating that fight?
Eubank then added: ‘You didn’t land a punch on me for three rounds. You got peppered with uppercuts and jabs. You were dominated in the three rounds before [the finish] happened.’

‘If that’s domination, you’re in a world of trouble,’ Smith said finally.
There is a lot riding on this fight for Eubank, who many will feel has few options if he is outclassed by Smith again, but he refused to be drawn on the thought of retiring if he tastes defeat for a second time.
‘I’m not talking about anything beyond this fight,’ he said. ‘I’m not talking about Conor Benn, I’m not talking about trilogies, I’m not talking about anything other than September 2nd and setting the score straight.
‘For sure there’s much more on the line now. There’s much more danger in this fight now. He has his confidence, his newfound confidence which he didn’t have in the first fight… That’s why when [he] did win [he was] jumping up and down, screaming and crying.
And that’s why this fight is gonna be so much more exciting because now it’s like I have everything to prove. Before it was kind of like alright, well, I just need to go in there and win. Now it’s like, if I lose, if this happens again, where do I go? That wasn’t the case in the first fight so it’s going to be very interesting to see how that affects my performance.’
Smith vs Eubank II: Repeat or Revenge?’ Takes place Saturday, September 2nd and is a pay-per-view event airing exclusively on Sky Sports Box Office, available to non-subscribers and Sky subscribers alike.
