Plant's mum insult led to punch-up, says Canelo

Don’t talk about my mum! Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez explains how Caleb Plant’s family slur led to their on-stage punch-up… warning the American ‘you don’t want to fight me now’

  • Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez said Caleb Plant insulted his mother, leading to their brawl
  • The two traded blows in their first press conference on their November bout
  • Alvarez warned Plant that he wouldn’t ‘want to fight me now’ after the incident

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has revealed that he shoved Caleb Plant and then brawled with the American in their first press conference because he made a comment about the Mexican’s mother.

The shocking scene ensued at the fighters’ on-stage face-to-face on Tuesday to promote their upcoming super-middleweight unification bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada on November 6.

Alvarez appeared riled by something Plant said and shoved the American, who aimed a slap back at Canelo. The stage then descended into violence as both boxers went for each other and their respective teams and security intervened to stop the chaotic scene.

Plant then hit back and the two fighters became embroiled in a scuffle at a press conference

Alvarez, the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, explained afterwards why the incident happened.

The Mexican said: ‘You can say whatever to me, but not to my mom. I’m going to fight anyone who says something about my mom. And he swung first. I just pushed him. He swung first, and I do what I do. He crossed the line.’

The fight promises to be a blockbuster, with 31-year-old Canelo the holder of the WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring titles at super-middleweight. Plant, 29, is undefeated and has held the IBF title since 2019.

However, Canelo, still clearly seething at Plant’s comment, was not in any mood to recognise the American’s threat in the ring.

‘You (Plant) are not on my level and you will see on November 6. You don’t want to fight now, I promise you,’ he said.

‘It will be over in eight rounds or less. I’m going to knock out this guy. Easy.

‘Caleb might be on the same level as Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith, but he’s not on my level. I respect that he isn’t here to back down. You can see from today that this is definitely going to be a good fight.’

A win would make Canelo the undisputed super-middleweight champion. ‘Sweet Hands’ Plant is currently 21-0, with 12 knockouts, while Alvarez has 56 wins from 59 fights, with 38 by knockout.

Canelo said Plant was ‘not at my level’ and that he would knock him out ‘in eight rounds or less’

‘I know what I need to do and I know a lot about him,’ Alvarez said. ‘He’s a good fighter but I know my skills. My experience is going to give me the edge in the fight.

‘He’s an insecure person and that’s why he came with a lot of excuses about lots of things. I don’t care about it though. I’m just going to do my best on November 6 and win the fight.

‘To be undisputed is history for Mexico and for everyone on my team. To be the undisputed champion is just a great thing for my career.’
