Former Aston Villa star hit with £45,000 unpaid child maintenance bill by court

A former Aston Villa star was forced to pay £45,000 in unpaid child support by a court in Birmingham.

The Child Maintenance Service (CMS) secured the 'liability' order at Birmingham Magistrates' Court. But the footballer – who can't be named for legal reasons due to reporting restrictions put in place to protect the identity and welfare of his child – didn't attend the session.

The former Villa player also didn't send any legal representation to the hearing, nor did he contest the move from CMS to recover money owed towards the care of his child.

The CMS application read: "Complaint for a liability order of child support and enforcement fee totalling £44,904.80 for the period unknown. In accordance with section 33 of the Child Support Act 1991."

Matthew Wheeler, from the CMS, told the BirminghamMail the case was one of many as part of a "bulk application" to the court.

Mr Wheeler said all of the defendants had been properly notified of the application by first class post at least seven days prior to the hearing, which took place on Friday, July 1.

He said: "Each defendant is liable to make payments of child maintenance and have failed to make one or more payments. Those payments have still not been paid in full."
