Paul Gallen’s gloves are off after Huni camp’s ‘donkey’ sledge

With just weeks to go before Justis Huni and Paul Gallen’s highly-anticipated fight, the gloves are officially off as the war of words begins.

While Gallen the prize fighter has been a master of selling his fights so far in his 11-0-1 career, he has largely held back from attacking Huni, with the Australian heavyweight titleholder unbeaten in his career.

With the fight against Gallen on June 16 before he goes off to represent Australia at the Olympics, Huni is facing his biggest test yet.

And Huni shapes as Gallen’s biggest challenge as well.

Call it mutual respect, call it a lack of insecurities to target, Gallen has rather focused on Huni’s promoter Dean Lonergan than Huni himself.

Earlier he called out Lonergan to “sharpen your pencil” in negotiations before getting a lion’s share of the bounty, and calling Huni’s fight with Christian Tsoye “disrespectful”.

Gallen also flipped Huni off at Magic Round, a run-in Huni said surprised him as it was the first time they’d met.

But that could be about to change as Gallen now has something to sink his teeth into — some disrespect.

Speaking to foxsports.com.au on Tuesday, Lonergan revealed a conversation he’d had with Rocki Huni, Justis’ father and trainer.

Asking him who he’d like to face next, Sonny Bill Williams, Barry Hall or Paul Gallen, Rocki’s response was reportedly none of the above.

“My thoughts are we’ve done such an amazing job with Paul Gallen … what’s next? The thought was if profile is what we’re still after, where’s the best place we can go?” Lonergan said.

“I said to Rocki, ‘What do you reckon after this we fight bloody Sonny Bill Williams or Barry Hall? We just double up on the profile’.

“He said, ‘Deano, no more football players. I’m sick of donkeys. I want to fight real fighters’.”

Rocki told Fox Sports the fight would be “a lot easier than what people think” and said Gallen only brings “a lot of eyeballs”.

But the comments got back to Gallen with the former NSW State of Origin skipper placing himself exactly where he wants — with his back against the wall.

He hit back at being called a donkey, saying not only will he knock Huni out, but that he’s made him relevant at all.

“He told Dean Lonergan that he doesn’t want to fight any more donkeys, he wants real boxers,” Gallen said on 2GB. “Well it’s going to be real funny when this donkey knocks your son out Mr Huni. And don’t forget mate, this donkey is making your son relevant so stay in your lane, pal. Maybe make your son say something.”

Asked if he had anything else to say, Gallen said: “What else is there to say, it’s ridiculous.

“He called me. No more donkeys, I’m making him relevant and I’m going to beat him.”
