"He won't get out of the first round" – Browne predicts rapid finish against Gallen

Paul Gallen is the most courageous athlete in Australia.

Any which way you carve it up, Paul Gallen should get knocked out in devastating fashion on Wednesday.

Any which way you carve it up, Paul Gallen should get knocked out in devastating fashion on Wednesday.

Which is why Gallen is braver than us mere mortals.

Few, if any, would put themselves in the same position.

Gallen has fought inexperienced sluggers, inept footy players, and an unfit Mark Hunt who hadn’t boxed in 20 years.

His opponent tonight, Lucas Browne, has won the former WBA heavyweight title, has fought champion-quality fighters on big boxing shows around the world, and weighed in at 117kg to Gallen’s 102kg with a seven-inch reach advantage.

The only logical conclusion is that Browne will jab Gallen in the early stages, then sting him with a vicious right hand at some point within the first three rounds of the six-round contest, and put the former NRL star flat on his back.

But there is no shame for Gallen if this happens. In fact, the opposite is true — he should be lauded for taking up some an extremely ludicrous challenge.

Few talented boxers will take on a former world champion after 11 professional bouts, let alone footballers who’ve faced the mediocre level of opposition Gallen has.

Paul Gallen is the most courageous athlete in Australia.

Anthony Mundine fought champion Sven Ottke for a world title in his 11th professional bout, but at least he’d won regional titles against the well-credentialed Sam Soliman and Guy Waters prior to that giant leap, which left him unconscious in Germany.

Gallen scraped to a draw against former AFL star Barry Hall, who was making his boxing debut, before surviving two near-knockdowns to edge Hunt on points.

Browne knows how to find range with his jab, he can use footwork to frustrate the shorter man, and his timing and fitness will be far superior to any rival on Gallen’s resume.

The list of the most courageous Australian athletes will inevitably be written at some point.

Put Gallen’s name there now.
