Oleksandr Usyk might have produced a masterful display to beat Anthony Joshua on Saturday night – but it seems boxing legend Mike Tyson wasn’t impressed with either fighter. In front of more than 66,000 people at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Usyk took the verdict on all three judges’ scorecard to claim the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight belts.

In doing so, the Ukrainian became a two-weight world champion having previously conquered the cruiserweight division.

Furthermore, he’s now just the third man to win world titles at cruiserweight and heavyweight levels, along with Evander Holyfield and David Haye.

However, Tyson, who became boxing’s youngest heavyweight champion aged just 20 in 1987, was underwhelmed with what he saw.

On Monday, he tweeted: “After watching the Joshua vs Usyk fight, maybe they had a bad day that night. From that performance do you really think they could have beat me in my prime?”

The question prompted a mixed response on social media, with @DaveAmitri backing the 55-year-old by tweeting: “Of course not. Poor AJ would have gone like Spinks. Usyk might have been hard to catch but you would have got him.”

European tour professional golfer Richard Bland seemed to agree: “Not a chance!!!” he wrote. “The most ferocious heavyweight that ever stepped into the ring!”

Not everyone was convinced however, with @OMITCHELL3 saying: “The sport’s evolved since your day. Both would smoke you in 4.”

The @BOXRAW account sought to settle the debate once and for all by tweeting a poll with the options of Tyson in his prime or Usyk, and indeed, it was the 55-year-old with more than 80% of the vote early on.

‘Iron Mike’ returned to the ring last November for an eight-round exhibition bout with fellow boxing legend Roy Jones Jr in Las Vegas, a contest that ended in a draw.

And he may not be done just yet, having teased potential rematches with long-time rivals Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, both of whom inflicted defeats on Tyson during his career.

As for Usyk and Joshua, it seems they will get the opportunity to impress Tyson again with the British fighter set to exercise a rematch clause.

Straight after his defeat on Saturday, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn admitted his client would not be favourite second time around.

“It’s going to be really difficult because Usyk’s confidence will be sky high, but when you get to the level of Anthony Joshua, as we saw after the Ruiz defeat, there’s no 10-round comeback fights and warm-ups.

“It’s straight back into the fire and he will want to go straight back into that rematch. He will be an underdog in the rematch this time after that tonight, but that’s what he does.”
