Josh Warrington could fight Leigh Wood at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground next summer in a bid to reignite his American dream.

The 32-year-old ‘Leeds Warrior’ was left devastated after losing his IBF featherweight title on points to Mexican Luis Alberto Lopez on Saturday.

It ruined his hopes, for now, of a long-awaited ‘away day’ in Las Vegas for his army of fans.

Yet Warrington’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: ‘I’d love to give him a big fight in America.

‘It could be Leo Santa Cruz, the fans would love a trip.

‘I still think Josh is world class, an elite featherweight. That wasn’t the performance of a fading fighter — just a fighter who was up against a very good challenger.

But Warrington (left) now faces tough career decisions after his latest surprise defeat

‘There’s another chapter to write in the Josh Warrington story. He could fight Wood at the City Ground in the summer.’

Nottingham Forest fanatic Wood admitted: ‘That would draw a massive crowd.

‘Warrington’s got a big (Leeds) following and so have I — it’s two rival cities both in the Premier League.

‘I want that City Ground fight and Josh is probably the only man around at the minute who can do it with me.’
