How Katie Taylor's upbringing has made her the most humble boxer

Katie Taylor is the anomaly of professional boxing… while Anthony Joshua is posting his private jet and Andy Ruiz is flashing his diamond necklace, Ireland’s golden girl is in reading the bible and spending time with family

  • Taylor will return to the ring to face Chantelle Cameron on Saturday evening
  • She enjoys living a simple life, hates the fame and trains in stripped back gyms
  • The 36-year-old is a dedicated Catholic and hates trash-talking her opponents

Katie Taylor is no stranger to the glitz and glam associated with fighting in New York and headlining major events under the Matchroom banner. But it’s no secret that the Irish boxer prefers living a simple life and training hard in her stripped back facilities.

Taylor has made it clear over the years that she doesn’t need the attention. Some would say she actually hates the cameras, the scheduled press events and her sponsorship obligations. But, how can someone so famous stay so private?

I believe Taylor’s background and upbringing in Ireland is responsible for creating an athlete that is so dedicated to boxing and driven by the prospect of reaching her full potential.

However, it goes without saying – Taylor is an anomaly. Just look at the likes of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, Andy Ruiz Jr and so on. They’ve all been seen flashing the cash at one point or another.

I am by no means saying the above are not dedicated to training, but they live a completely different lifestyle to that of the Bray Bomber. When has Taylor ever taken to social media to show off her private jet or her diamond necklaces? I doubt she even owns any!

Taylor’s never been pictured partying into the early hours of the morning and she can hardly bring herself to slag off her opponents in the build-up to fights. She really is a phenomenon.

So, where did it all begin? Well, Taylor was born on July 2, 1986. She has an older sister called Sarah and two older brothers called Lee and Peter. The latter is known for being a mathematics professor at Dublin City University.

Like most children, Taylor took part in a range of sports. She boxed and played football on a regular basis but also spent her time dabbling in Gaelic football and camogie. Taylor was also a keen runner and joined Bray Runners, a local athletics club.

It comes as no surprise that several American collages approached Taylor and offered her sports scholarships to study at their establishments. However, Taylor decided to work hard at St Killian’s school before attending University College Dublin.

Taylor embarked on an art degree at UCD – which is widely known for its sports scholarship program. However, she dropped out of university once her sporting career took off.

Nevertheless, Taylor did continue studying in her own unique way. The Irish born boxer took Gaelic classes as an adult and has expressed a desire to conduct an interview in her own language.

Taylor is also a devoted Catholic and regularly attended church with her family in Dublin. It’s no secret that Taylor reads Psalm 18 before every fight and that she thanks God after each bout.

Taylor is known for attending St. Mark’s Church in Dublin. The Irish church have said that she fights God’s corner in the ring and that she expresses her love for him through boxing.

Meanwhile, Taylor’s mum previously said: ‘We’ve always believed that what Katie does has been a gift from God. She’s born to box and we want to bring God into the equation, I suppose, and not to leave him out of it because we feel he’s a huge part of who she is.’

Despite Taylor’s success, she has remained humble and true to herself. She has diverged from the typical boxing route of calling people out in demeaning ways and talking trash. Instead, she lets her actions inside the ring do the talking.

Speaking about the way in which she conducts herself, Taylor said she would never ‘compromise’ who she was to play up to the cameras. She even cited Manny Pacquiao as her inspiration.

‘I think I’ll stay away from that,’ she smiles. ‘I don’t think you really need to do it. Manny Pacquiao is the most loved boxer in the world and I’ve never heard him trash talking. He always has a smile on his face. I’m never going to compromise who I am.’

It’s safe to say Taylor lets her boxing do the talking. The Irish boxer is five years and 11 months into her professional boxing career. She’s fought 22 times with 22 wins and no losses.

Taylor is also a two-division world champion. She has held six world titles, one of which was a vacant title win, and the other five were lineal championship wins.

She’s had some exceptional fights against Delfine Persoon, Amanda Serrano, Jennifer Han, Firuza Sharipova, Elizabeth Carabajal, Miriam Gutierrez, and Christina Linardatou.

Taylor will return to the ring on Saturday night – putting her undefeated record on the line against British boxer, Chantelle Cameron at the 3Arena in Dublin.
