Ricky Hatton has blasted Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition bout against YouTuber Logan Paul as ‘s*** for boxing’ and indicative of how ‘money seems more important than legacy’ in the modern era.

Mayweather returned to the ring for the first time since New Year’s Eve 2018 to face social media influencer Paul, a boxing novice having lost his only professional contest.

The 44-year-old could pocket over $100m from the controversial eight-round bout, which he dominated although was surprisingly unable to stop his 26-year-old rival at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Paul and younger brother Jake have chanced their arms at the sweet science in recent years, with the latter offering UFC stars career-high paydays when they step in the ring with him.

And Hatton, who lost to Mayweather in December 2007, took to Instagram to hit out at his former rival and bemoaned the current state of affairs in boxing.

‘WTF was all this about? What happened to the days where fighters would put there lives on the line to try be the best and at least fight the best,’ he posted to his 300,000 followers.

‘Now we have fighters calling out youtubers as that’s where the most money is these days due to the social media world we live in???

‘I can live with an exhibition like Mike (Tyson) and Roy (Jones) did between two legends of our sport but the greatest fighter of all time who has only recently retired against somebody who’s only there cus [sic] of how many followers he has and not because of who he’s previously beat???

‘Money is important that’s why we went from the amateurs and turned pro. But these days money seems more important than the legacy.

‘Floyd and Logan, hey Everyman to there [sic] own. Good luck to both. My personal opinion that was s*** for boxing. #getupthereboy’.

Hatton had previously reflected that the Miami exhibition was damaging for the sport and fans ‘deserved to be entertained’.

‘It is all about money with him,’ he said last week. ‘Me personally, I thought it was about the fans, the fans pay your wages. The fans deserved to be entertained. Floyd isn’t bothered as long as he gets money. It shows total disrespect to his peers and the other great champions of old.’

Mayweather has defended his decision to step in the ring with the YouTube novice, saying that ‘your kids can’t eat legacy’ after his fight with Paul.

‘They say, “It’s not all about the money.” Well, your kids can’t eat legacy… The patches on my trunks, [earned me] $30million alone. So who’s really the smartest one in the sport of boxing? When it comes to legalised bank robbing, I’m the best,’ he said via Michael Benson.

Mayweather, who views these exhibitions as ‘entertainment’ rather than boxing, hinted that he may not participate in any more events of this ilk in the future.
