Gervonta Davis avoids jail time for 2020 hit-and-run that injured four people

Unbeaten boxer Gervonta Davis has unexpectedly avoided jail time for a hit-and-run crash in 2020 that injured four people.

The three-division world champion was sentenced to 90 days of home detention followed by three years’ probation on Friday afternoon in Baltimore.

Baltimore circuit court judge Althea M Handy also confirmed that Davis must complete 200 hours of community service and take part in other programs, as per the Baltimore Banner.

Davis put in four guilty pleas over traffic offences, but there was no agreement over sentencing after entering those pleas.

The 28-year-old faced a maximum of 50 months in jail for the incident in 2020, which put four people in hospital, one of which was a pregnant woman.

Jyair Smith was the pregnant victim and she spoke out against a deal to keep Davis out of jail. Saying: ‘I begged Mr Gervonta Davis, I looked him in his eyes. I said, “I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant.” He never once came over to help me.’

Davis, known as Tank, took his professional record to 29-0 on 22 April with a seventh round KO victory over Ryan Garcia in one of the biggest fights of the year.

When he was asked about his next potential opponent after stopping Garcia, with Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney both credible possibilities, Davis said: ‘We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board to see what’s the best decision for my career.’

Asked if he has considered his next opponent or moving weight classes, Davis replied: ‘Not right now.’
