Tyson Fury’s initial motive to fight British rival Anthony Joshua has been questioned by promoter Mark Neilson. Fury and Joshua were set to take on each other in a historic ‘Battle of Britain’ bout in Cardiff on December 3 after AJ accepted the offer of the Gypsy King.

A contract saga then followed though, as Fury announced on Instagram last Monday that the fight was off due to Joshua not meeting a contract deadline in time. The WBC heavyweight champion then returned to social media to confirm his promoter Frank Warren had talked him round to give both Joshua and the fight a chance to get over the line.

Despite this Fury’s token extension did not last long, as he once again announced his fight was off due to the time his rival’s team were taking to sign on the dotted line. The Gypsy King’s actions have not been well received by those in the boxing world, with many speculating that Fury had been bluffing his want for the bout.

One of those who seemingly doubts Fury’s motive is Nielson, who accused the Gypsy King of potentially ‘playing games’. Speaking about the initial chances of the fight, the promoter told iFL TV: “I had a little hope [that the fight would go ahead] but I didn’t have too high expectations.

“The timelines and deadlines they keep putting on it, I know for putting on a southern area title fight how much you have to go backwards and forwards, agree timings and purses, dates, this has been a couple of weeks… this is one of the biggest fights in living memory it is not going to be done in two weeks.”

Doubting the world champion, he added: “Did he want it in the first place Fury, is he just playing games? Fair play to Tyson Fury for what he has done and all credit to him, but he plays the media very well. It would not surprise me if it was all a bluff.

“He just wants the [Mahmoud] Charr fight and the big unification with [Oleksandr] Usyk next year in Saudi with massive money and he is just playing with AJ to get people talking.” As mentioned by Nielson, it seems the Gypsy King could well be taking on Charr instead.

Charr himself has called out Fury, accusing the Gypsy King of – like Joshua – for refusing to sign the contract. He told Sky Sports: “You didn’t sign. You make the same play like Anthony Joshua. I can’t understand. Yesterday you shoot your mouth [off] very big. You want to fight two guys in a night. Send the paper and make the fight happen.”
