Frank Warren confirms Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury will happen on one condition
Frank Warren expects Tyson Fury’s long-awaited undisputed heavyweight title fight with Anthony Joshua to happen if both fighters win their next bouts.
Fury’s co-promoter wants Joshua to defends his WBA, IBF and WBO titles when he takes on Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in London on Saturday, because Fury’s team ‘wants the fight.’
Meanwhile, Fury will face Deontay Wilder for the third time in Las Vegas next month, hoping to continue his unbeaten streak against the American following a split draw and seventh round TKO in the two previous bouts.
Despite members of Joshua’s camp accusing Fury and his team of shying away from the fight, Warren insists they want it to happen.
‘I’m confident it’ll happen if Joshua and Tyson win their respective fights, yes, definitely,’ Warren told BBC Sport.
‘That’s going to be the issue, winning their fights. Hopefully nothing will go wrong. These are big guys, big heavyweights – anything can happen.’
Last year, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said that a two-fight deal with Fury had been agreed but the plans were scuppered after an arbitrator in the US ruled that Wilder had the right to a Third fight with the Gypsy King.
Warren explained: ‘We couldn’t sign anything until the arbitration was done.’
The veteran promoter also thinks that there is a chance that only one of the fights between the British pair will be in the UK because other venues could provide more of a financial appeal.
‘Worst-case scenario is only one of the fights will be in the UK,’ he said.
‘The truth about what will happen is that two fighters will look at the bottom line.
‘Wherever the bottom line is, whether it’s Saudi Arabia, Wembley or the moon, that’s where they’ll go. They’ll go where the money is. Doesn’t matter what anyone else says.’
