Floyd Mayweather ranked sixth on net worth list but Conor McGregor misses out
Floyd Mayweather has been ranked sixth in a list of the richest athletes in history with Michael Jordan coming out on top.
The retired boxer, who bowed out of the sport with an unblemished record of 50-0, earned $1.2billion during his career when adjusted for inflation.
That falls some way short of the $2.62bn earned by Jordan during his trophy-laden career with the Chicago Bulls.
Golfers Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus follow behind Jordan with Cristiano Ronaldo rounding out the top 5 in a list compiled by sports business website Sportico.
Mayweather is the only combat athlete to make the top 10 with Mike Tyson ($775m) in 16th and Manny Pacquiao ($630m) in 18th.
Oscar De La Hoya is the other boxer in the top 25 having earned $580m during his illustrious ring career.
Former two-weight UFC champion Conor McGregor does not make the list despite being involved in the second-richest fight of all time when he earned $100m for taking on Mayweather in 2017.
Explaining the prominence of golfers on the list, sports marketing expert Bob Dorfman told Sportico: “With competitive careers that can span 30 years or more, golfers have the longest shelf life of any pro athletes
"Combine that with their global appeal across a broad and high-end fan demographic, and it’s no wonder so many rank high among the all-time earners in sports."
Sportico did explain that McGregor would make the top 25 if earnings were not adjusted for inflation, as would tennis star Rafael Nadal and NFL legend Tom Brady.
The website claims to have arrived at its findings by conducting extensive research and by including salaries, prize money, purses, bonuses, endorsements, licensing, royalties, memorabilia, book deals, appearances and golf course design in their final figures.

Mayweather was the richest fighter of his generation as he won world titles in five weight divisions and earned almost $500m combined for his two biggest fights, against Pacquaio and McGregor.
He has also taken part in lucrative exhibition bouts, including against YouTube star Logan Paul in July for which he was reportedly paid another nine-figure sum.
But while Mayweather appears to have invested large portions of his investment, Tyson filed for bankruptcy in 2003 despite having earned $400m in earnings.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, has now retired from boxing to run for president of the Philippines next year. His final bout was a points defeat by Cuban Yordenis Ugas in August.
