Eubank Jr's 'lack of boxing ability' will cost him, says Smith

Chris Eubank Jr’s ‘lack of boxing ability’ will cost him against the top fighters, says Callum Smith, who insists the middleweight ‘carries his dad’s name… and talks a good fight’

  • British middleweight Chris Eubank Jr has not fought since November 2019
  • Callum Smith lost his undefeated record to Canelo Alvarez in December
  • The pair have never met in the ring and Smith did not back Eubank Jr’s ‘ability’
  • Liverpudlian fighter Smith said he doesn’t see Eubank ‘beating the top guys’

Callum Smith says Chris Eubank Jr’s ‘lack of boxing ability’ lets him down on the big stage and that is why the middleweight will never beat any of the top fighters in his division.

The British rivals have never met in the ring, but could have fought against each other in the final of the World Boxing Super Series in 2018 before Eubank lost to George Groves in the semi-finals, with Smith knocking out Groves in the final.

Smith is plotting his next step after losing to Canelo Alvarez in December but insists Eubank Jr, who has linked up with Team Sauerland who promote the World Boxing Super Series, will struggle to win world belts in the future.

Chris Eubank Jr (above) has not got the ability to beat top middleweights, says Callum Smith

Liverpudlian fighter Smith (R) lost his unbeaten record to Mexican Canelo Alvarez in December

‘He can get in the mix because his name always brings a lot,’ Smith told Sky Sports

‘He carries his dad’s name so he has a big profile. He talks a good fight so will always talk himself into big fights.

‘But as we’ve seen in the Billy Joe Saunders fight [when Eubank Jr lost his unbeaten record in 2014] and the Groves fight, when he steps up to the highest level his lack of boxing ability seems to let him down.

‘He is very fit, athletic, strong. He’s a better middleweight than he is a super-middleweight. But at the very top level he lacks the natural ability to beat the top guys.

Eubank Jr (L) pulled off the greatest win of his career against James DeGale in February 2019

‘He will always be in a position to be in those fights. But I don’t see him beating any of the top ones.’

Eubank Jr, 31, beat James DeGale in February 2019 for one of the biggest wins of his career, but has not fought since a second-round knockout win against Matt Korobov in November 2019.

Liverpudlian fighter Smith, 30, who lost his undefeated record against Mexican great Canelo last year, is considering a move up to light-heavyweight for his next challenge.
