Eddie Hearn promises 'millions' to the winner of Whyte and Franklin

JEF POWELL: A lucrative bout with Anthony Joshua lies in wait for the winner of Dillian Whyte and Jermaine Franklin… with Eddie Hearn offering the pair ‘millions’ to fight the former world champion next year

  • Dillian Whyte is set to fight American Jermaine Franklin at Wembley on Saturday
  • The 34-year-old knows a victory could set up a fight against Anthony Joshua
  • Promoter Eddie Hearn has promised ‘millions’ to the winner of Whyte v Franklin

Dillian Whyte is on a fortune as added incentive to win his comeback fight this Saturday night. Then again, so is his American opponent Jermaine Franklin

Promoter Eddie Hearn has promised ‘millions’ to whichever of them prevails in the Wembley Arena, by way of new year fight with Anthony Joshua.

Joshua passed on a mega-bucks showdown with Tyson Fury next week so as to focus on his psychological recovery after two successive defeats by Ukraine’s Olexsandr Usyk, who relieved him of his raft of world heavyweight titles.

The winner is expected to face Anthony Joshua (pictured), as he returns to the ring next year

Now Joshua needs a dance partner to help him decide how best to go again at championship level.

That proposed warm up will be against Whyte, who suffered his second knock-out in three fights when he challenged Fury for his belt, or the undefeated Franklin.

Either would come from the higher reaches of so-called ‘interim’ opponents. Whyte is perennially dangerous but his punch resistance may be weakening.

Franklin is a notably heavy hitter but there is not a name of note on that winning record.

Whyte proclaims himself ‘still a lion ready to come roaring out of my cage.’ Franklin, having taken note of the twin punches by which Fury and Alexander Povetkin flattened the 34-year-old Brixton Body-Snatcher, says: ‘I will knock him out with an uppercut and finish his career.’

Across London at the 02 on this same night, two battling Brits are on some hope of an even bigger windfall as they do battle for the WBO interim super-middleweight title.

The winner of Zach Parker and John Ryder will be eyeing the chance of a role as the comeback opponent for Mexican super-star Canelo Alvarez next May.

Whyte v Franklin will be televised live on Dazn and Parker v Ryder live on BT Sports this Saturday night.
