Conor McGregor fuels excitement among boxing fans by teasing Ricky Hatton fight

Conor McGregor has teased a potential exhibition fight against Ricky Hatton – as the 'Hitman' prepares for his boxing return.

British boxing great Hatton is making a comeback after a decade out of the ring in a final farewell bout against Mexican icon Marco Antonio Barrera. He returns in front of his adoring home fans at the AO Manchester Arena on Saturday night.

Hatton, 44, has not fought since his retirement after defeat to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012. And The Hitman has stated that he expects his battle against Barrera to be his last hurrah after his remarkable weight loss journey.

But Hatton's surprise comeback could be prolonged by a possible mega-money exhibition against UFC star McGregor.

McGregor has had one fight in the boxing ring, losing to Floyd Mayweather in a professional fight in 2017 that raked in more than £500million and ranked second in all-time pay-per-view sales.

The Notorious has been out of action since breaking his leg in his last outing in the octagon against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. But he has repeatedly expressed his interest in returning to the squared circle.

And his latest hint has left fans excited over a possible bout against Hatton. McGregor replied to Hatton's agent Paul Speak, saying: "Wouldn’t that be something," when the possibility of the fight was highlighted.

It remains to be seen whether a fight could be made, but there would certainly be interest in the crossover contest between two fighting greats.

But McGregor is not the only high-profile opponent, tipped for Hatton, who was asked by Sky Sports if he would take on 'Money' Mayweather again, 15 years after losing to his old 50-0 rival in a WBC welterweight title clash.

"I'd have to look at it," Hatton admitted. "To share the ring with Floyd Mayweather again would be something else."
