Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall weigh-in going ahead but fight in doubt

The weigh-in for Savannah Marshall's undisputed boxing clash against Claressa Shields will go ahead behind closed doors with a fight announcement expected later today.

The undefeated middleweight boxers are set to put to bed their bitter rivalry in the ring on Saturday evening, though the bout could yet be scrapped following the death of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who sadly passed away at Balmoral Castle yesterday.

Promoters Boxxer are expected to issue a statement on the status of the bout, which is scheduled to take place at the O2 Arena in London, this afternoon but the 1pm (BST) weigh-in will go ahead as planned.

A previous statement read: "An announcement regarding the status of Saturday's event… will be made following consultation with relevant government and sports sector bodies and will be made at the earliest possible opportunity."

The second day of England's third and final test match against South Africa has already been postponed, the EFL have called off their two Friday night fixtures and there will be no play at the BMW PGA Championship.

The Premier League are still yet to announce if this weekend's scheduled fixtures will go ahead after seeking advice from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The league have been told the decision rests solely at their door.

Marshall's long-awaited showdown against Shields dates back to 2012, when the Hartlepool-born boxer outpointed her in the second round of the 2012 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships – Shields' only-ever defeat inside the ring.

Now headlining a historic all-female billing, Marshall has vowed to pick up where she left off a decade ago. "I beat you and I'll beat you again," she told Shields in July. "I'm not going to just beat you, I'm going to outbox you. I'm going to hurt you and I'm going to outbox you."

Shields hit back: "It means a lot to be here. She got lucky in 2012 but she won't be lucky in 2022. I don't hate nobody … but I really do have a huge dislike for her."
