Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder is CONFIRMED for May 6 in Mexico

Canelo Alvarez will defend his super-middleweight crown against John Ryder on May 6 in Mexico as the British underdog bids to spoil his dream homecoming and claim the undisputed throne on Cinco de Mayo weekend

  • Ryder is being rewarded with the fight of a lifetime after a long ring career
  • The 34-year-old has never claimed world glory in 13 years as a professional
  • Canelo views their bout as an interim return from injury before a mega-fight

Islington’s John Ryder is to be rewarded for a long and honourable ring career with the fight of a lifetime.

Ryder will challenge superstar Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed world super-middleweight title on the Mexican’s first fight in his homeland for almost 12 years.

The 34-year-old Ryder’s persistence in climbing the boxing ladder the hard way, mostly via small halls, now takes him to the tumultuous occasion of Canelo’s homecoming.

That takes place in a football stadium in Canelo’s home city Guadalajara on May 6.

More significantly, that is the weekend of Mexico‘s patriotic Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Ryder has racked up four straight victories but will head into the fight as a massive underdog

While Canelo views this as an interim return from injury before his next mega-fight, mandatory challenger Ryder will not object to being cast as the underdog. Not when it involves the biggest payday of his career.

He is yet to claim a world title in his 13-year professional career but many remain adamant that should not be the case, with his points defeat against former super-middleweight champion Callum Smith in November 2019 sparking widespread controversy.

Since that contentious loss, Ryder has racked up four straight victories and claimed a huge scalp in beating two-time middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs last year.

His last outing, against domestic rival Zach Parker, only ended in victory when the Derby fighter picked up a fight-ending injury after five rounds.

Canelo, who most regard as one of the top five pound-for-pound fighters on the planet, will undoubtedly represent Ryder’s toughest test so far.

The 32-year-old was last in action back in September, when he bounced back from defeat against Dmitry Bivol to see off old rival Gennady Golovkin.
