Boxing’s medical suspension rules after Francis Ngannou’s warning to Tyson Fury
Five potential opponents for Jake Paul on boxing return
Tyson Fury received a brutal warning from Francis Ngannou ahead of their Saudi Arabia showdown when the former UFC champion claimed that the Gypsy King could miss his planned world title unification fight with Oleksandr Usyk in December.
‘The Predator’ delivered a chilling message to his British opponent when he asked what the “minimum medical suspension” in boxing is, believing that Fury will still be recovering from their clash when he is expected to defend his WBC belt against Usyk on potentially December 23.
Fury’s date of destiny with Usyk will be the first heavyweight unification fight in 24 years, as the Ukrainian will also put his WBA, WBO and IBF belts on the line.
The huge fight has been subject to delay, with Fury opting to face MMA star Ngannou first before getting down to more serious business, but the Cameroon national believes he can be something of a disruptor to Fury’s plans.
Ngannou wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I don’t know what’s the minimum medical suspension in boxing but I really don’t understand how Tyson can fight in December after what’s going to happen on 10/28.”
According to the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC), ‘A contestant who is knocked out shall be suspended for a minimum period of sixty days and a contestant who loses by technical knock out shall be suspended for a minimum period of thirty days from participating in any boxing activity.’
If Ngannou is successful in his quest to knock out undefeated Fury on October 28, the 35-year-old will have only served 56 days of his medical suspension by December 23, rendering him ineligible to fight.
In a further explanation of the rules, the ABC says ‘At the discretion of the physician, longer suspension periods may be issued for either the TKO or KO.

‘Boxers shall receive a mandatory seven-day rest period after competing in an event. Day 1 of the mandatory rest period shall commence on the first day following the event.
‘A physician may issue a medical suspension any time he/she believes it to be in the best interest for the safety of a boxer (i.e., high blood pressure at pre-fight physical). In any/all cases, the decision by the physician to issue or extend a suspension is final.’
If Fury is serious about facing Usyk on December 23 he must hope that Ngannou, who is said to have the hardest punch on the planet, does not land a decisive blow during their contest in Saudi Arabia.
