Alvarez apologises to Lionel Messi after lashing out over World Cup celebrations

Canelo Alvarez has backtracked after laying into Lionel Messi in the aftermath of Argentina's World Cup win over Mexico.

Messi was instrumental in Saturday's 2-0 win for his team against Canelo's countrymen, and La Albiceleste were filmed celebrating wildly in the changing rooms afterwards as they kept their bid for the trophy alive. But the boxing icon was left incensed as the midfield magician appeared to be kicking a Mexico top as he danced and sang.

"Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag. He better pray to God that I don't find him," tweeted 'Saul'. "Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I'm not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did."

Messi's former international teammate Sergio Aguero weighed in to support his compatriot, which only seemed to further incense the multi-weight world champion. “You too, b******? " he tweeted at the Manchester City legend. "You used to write me, ‘oh, oh, Canelo’, and now you’re crying. Don’t be a hypocrite, b******.”

Despite Canelo's aggressive stance, football fans appeared to side with Messi, with shirts on the floor a common occurrence after football games. And sure enough, on Wednesday it was the boxer forced into a rare backward step.

"These past few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologise to Messi and the people of Argentina," he tweeted. "Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn."

The climbdown appeared to amuse many football lovers, with @NealGardner_ noting: "So… Messi got a public apology from Canelo without even saying a word. Lol." @UTDTreyyyy added: "Messi ignored him during the whole process and he still apologised Messi still don’t know him."

@lerdhan1 said: The GOAT didn't even made a single response, it was people that came out and let this clown of a boxer know he was in the wrong. If you're not humble, you can't enjoy this privilege. Kids, stay humble."

Ironically, Canelo has been renowned for staying humble during his stellar career. The 32-year-old last fought in September, winning his trilogy fight with old rival Gennady Golovkin.
