Premier League footballer who was arrested over alleged rape has bail extended

A Premier League footballer arrested in connection with allegations of rape has had his bail extended until January 2023.

The unnamed player, who is accused of two separate attacks, one in June this year and one in April 2021, has not been suspended by his club, who have previously stated that they will take action if any is needed after investigations have been completed.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the player, who is in his 20s, will now remain on bail until January of next year.

"On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police. It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022," a statement from the Metropolitan Police said.

"While in custody, he was further arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape that were alleged to have been committed in April and June of 2021 against a different woman in her 20s.

“No further action will be taken in relation to the alleged offence in June 2021.

"This has been explained to the complainant who continues to be supported by officers. The man was initially bailed until a date in early October. His bail has since been extended until a date in early January 2023."

In July, the player's club said: "We are aware of the allegations which are currently the subject of a police investigation.

"We have confirmed that the player denies the allegations and is on police bail pending the outcome of their enquiries. There have been no charges laid and the player can fulfil his professional commitments.

"We take our commitments and responsibilities seriously and have followed our safeguarding policies and procedures. We will keep this matter under close consideration and will review further if circumstances change."
