John Cena is set to return to the WWE for a feud with Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, according to reports. There has been doubts over the match due to Cena’s filming schedule.
Those have now been dismissed by leading wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer who has confirmed Cena and Reigns are set to clash in the main event of SummerSlam.
There had been doubts over Cena’s availability because of him filming new film Argylle in Europe in August.
Meltzer said: “The movie thing is not a hurdle. This is what I was told today.
“The movie thing’s not a hurdle, and whatever it is, I don’t know exactly what it is, but the belief is it’s all going down. So, the match is happening.”
Reigns has been Universal Champion for months ever since his return alongside Paul Heyman last year.
His new ‘Tribal Chief’ gimmick has seen him transform into a heel and a new arrogant style.
Alongside The Usos he has dominated all opponents since winning the title.
Reigns faces Edge this Sunday at Money in the Bank but is expected to retain before then going one-on-one with Cena at SummerSlam in August.
The Rated R Superstar has been rumoured to be facing Seth Rollins at the event.
There had been a number of matches speculated for Reigns including that of Brock Lesnar or former WWE Champion, Drew McIntyre from RAW.
“It’s possible he could start after or end prior to the date, or even get a few days off.”
Reigns vs. Cena would be a massive match as WWE look to capitalise on fans returning and dent the impact AEW have had in recent weeks and months.
It appears the Tribal Chief will take on Cena though in what will be a marquee match in front of fans at SummerSlam.
Meltzer had previously said: “No word on when he shows up for television, but Cena is free of responsibilities for acting work at this point and until after SummerSlam.
“Cena vs. Reigns is locked in as the main event for the show.
“However, Cena is in a movie called ‘Argylle,’ a spy thriller which will be shooting in Europe in August.
