White adamant McGregors return will be in UFC despite Mayweather talks

UFC supremo Dana White has emphatically quashed talk of Conor McGregor fighting Floyd Mayweather upon his return from injury.

McGregor and Mayweather fought it out in the boxing ring in August 2017, in what has gone down as one of the most lucrative events in sporting history. It was the American icon who came out on top then, defeating the Irishman by TKO in the 10th round at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There has since been talk of Mayweather fighting it out with McGregor again when the Irishman returns from his leg injury sustained in his trilogy defeat to Dustin Poirier.

However, UFC chief White – who played an instrumental role in promoting the initial mega-money boxing fight – has poured cold water over that talk.

"Of course, there's talk about a Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather rematch," Jim Rome said on his show when speaking to White, who quickly stopped him in his tracks.

"Not me. I’m not talking about that," White laughed before insisting that his next fight will be in the octagon.

"No, it’ll be in the cage," White said. "Conor is looking to come back the end of this year, early next year."

He added: "When I do talk to Conor, Conor wants to fight. Conor gets all kinds of offers for movie roles and all these other things that he can go and do and make money. He doesn’t want to do any of that. Conor wants to fight.”

It has been a long journey back for McGregor, who hasn't fought since breaking his leg at UFC 264 against Poirier in July 2021.

However, despite White's emphatic opinion, McGregor has previously admitted he is eager to get the boxing gloves back on.

"Boxing is my first love in combat sports. I had such a great time the last time I was out there," the 33-year-old outspoken Irishman told Sky Sports in May.

"Obviously, my return will be in the octagon for UFC – that story is far from over, in fact it's just being written, it is just the beginning. But, boxing, for sure I will grace the squared circle again in the future.
