UFC star Luke Rockhold smears blood all over opponents face and in his mouth

UFC star Luke Rockhold shocked fans on Saturday night by smearing blood over his opponent's face and in his mouth.

The former middleweight champion lost his third-straight fight against Paulo Costa at UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his opponent handed a unanimous decision victory. However, during the fight, Rockhold pulled off his bizarre stunt after pinning Costa down on the canvas before rubbing his head against him.

Rockhold could be seen smearing his blood over the Brazilian's face as Costa squirmed in an attempt to move his head out the way and get back to his feet.

Although Costa appeared to grin during the incident, he later described it as a "very weird moment". Meanwhile, the commentators labelled it “hilarious”, “twisted” and “so Luke Rockhold”.

Following the bout, which was named fight of the night, Rockhold announced his retirement from mixed-martial arts. “I've been through so much the last few years," he explained. "Thank you UFC. I can't do this any more. I gave it my all, but I'm old.”

The 37-year-old was returning to the cage for the first time in three years and last tasted victory back in 2017. He retires with a professional record of 16-6.

Away from the UFC, Rockhold has always been a colourful character, with his love life even seeing him date popstar Demi Lovato and be kicked off Millionaire Matchmaker.

Despite admitting he did not know what was going on at the time of the incident, Costa later slammed Rockhold's tactics inside the cage during his post-fight press conference.

“I didn’t see it in the moment of the fight," explained Costa, via MMA Fighting. "I just felt something on my face, but I was so worried about blocking his arms to not get elbowed in the face and punched. But I felt something. Now, when I saw, it’s a very disgusting scene. It’s a very weird moment.”

He went on to add: “I saw the moment where [Yoel] Romero kisses [Rockhold] after beating him, as well. That was the weirdest moment that I had seen, but this beat that moment.

"I don’t know why Luke did that. Maybe he was so frustrated and angry because he was losing the fight. But I took a very long shower after the fight.”
