UFC star Jon Jones has been arrested and will face charges of domestic violence and vehicle tampering, according to police in the US.

According to TMZ, police received a call from the Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Friday morning.

Jones was then arrested at approximately 5:45am on suspicion of misdemeanour battery domestic violence and injuring or tampering with a vehicle.

He is currently being held at Clark County Detention Centre and his bail has been set at $8,000, but Jones is on a 12-hour hold, according to reports.

His advisor Richard Schaefer told ESPN's Mike Coppinger: "The facts are still developing, we really don't know yet the full story so I'm not going to make any comment until I have a chance to talk to Jon and until we see see how this plays out."

Jones, 34, is regarded as one of the best UFC fighters of all-time.

Among his many achievements, he holds the record for the longest light heavyweight champion reign in history at 1501 days – or just over four years.

His only career loss was via controversial disqualification against Matt Hamill in 2009.

Despite that defeat, and his record reading 26-1 (1), for many, Jones has never been truly beaten fair and square in the octagon.

Outside of the cage, the New Mexico native has been in trouble with the law on more than one occasion.

He has previously pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run as well as two failed drug tests.

Jones has been getting ready for a return to heavyweight competition, aiming to add that title to his vast collection.

He told ESPN on Thursday before the UFC Hall of Fame ceremony that he weighed 255 pound and was looking to increase that to 270 for his heavyweight debut.

The fighter is in Vegas because his 2013 fight against Alexander Gustafsson, which he won via unanimous decision, is being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.
