UFC president Dana White offers Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier rematch update

UFC president Dana White has confirmed Dustin Poirier wants a trilogy fight against Conor McGregor, and that was the reason he passed up a tilt for the lightweight belt.

Poirier shocked the MMA world back in January when he knocked out McGregor in the second round of their lightweight bout at UFC 256.

The 'Diamond' put in a career-best performance to dominate the 'Notorious' and stop him in his tracks with a series of brutal calf kicks.

McGregor immediately called for a rematch, while it was speculated that Poirier could go on to fight against Michael Chandler for the vacant UFC lightweight title.

With Khabib Nurmagodov now retired for good, Chandler will instead go on to fight Charles Oliveira for the 155lbs strap at UFC 262.

And White indicated this week that Poirier had turned down the chance to fight for the title in an attempt to secure a trilogy bout.

Speaking at Thursday's press conference ahead of this weekend's UFC260 card, White explained that he felt it was the right move for Poirier to make.

“Dustin wants the rematch [with McGregor],” the UFC president said.

“That’s smart. That’s what he should do.

"He should take the rematch, take that fight.
