Conor McGregor has hit out at the UFC after they reconfigured the card for UFC 279 following Khamzat Chimaev’s failure to make weight. He was originally set to face Nate Diaz in a five round main event fight, but weighed in seven and a half pounds over the welterweight limit.

As a result, the UFC removed Chimaev from the main event, with Tony Ferguson stepping in to fight Diaz instead.

Chimaev, meanwhile, will face Kevin Holland in the co-main event, a fight McGregor has claimed is “a more favorable bout for the failed cutter”. Holland was originally set to fight Daniel Rodriguez, but Rodriguez will now take on Ferguson’s original opponent Li Jingliang.

However, McGregor believes the UFC should not have allowed Chimaev to fight at all after failing to make weight, suggesting the move “will only make many others in the game follow suit”. McGregor tweeted: “My opinion they should have pulled khamzat from the card entirely.

“Reconfiguring bouts, and with a more favorable bout for the failed cutter, will only make many others in the game follow suit. The smirks on the scale where enough for me. Pull from the card and starve. McG UFC.”

McGregor also vowed that a trilogy fight with Diaz “will happen” one day, despite the 37-year-old preparing to walk away from the UFC following his bout with Ferguson. “Congrats Nate Diaz on making it to the end of his contractual obligations with the UFC, and as a bonafide superstar goer,” McGregor added.

“An incredible feat. Fair play. Our trilogy will happen.”

And Diaz is open to settling the rivalry with a third fight against McGregor, having told InsideFighting ahead of UFC 279: “The timing’s not on right now. We’ll worry about that later and for sure it’s gonna happen at some point.

“He can get back on what he’s gotta do, whatever that is. When we’re gonna match up, we’re gonna match up, but we ain’t going nowhere.”
