UFC legend Conor McGregor has been on the receiving end of criticism from a Hollywood star.

Oscar-nominated actor Liam Neeson claimed the Dublin-born combat star ruins the repetitions of Irish folk everywhere. During an interview with Men’s Health, the 70-year-old did not hold back when offering his assessment of the ‘Notorious One’ and MMA as a whole.

The Taken actor said: “UFC (MMA's premier promotion) I can’t stand. That to me is like a bar fight. I know the practitioners are like, ‘no, you’re wrong— the months of training we do …’ Why don’t you just grab a beer bottle and hit the other guy over the head?

"That’s the next stage of the UFC. I hate it. That little leprechaun Conor McGregor, he gives Ireland a bad name. I know he’s fit, and I admire him for that. But I can’t take it.”

Though McGregor has been more than happy to engage in a war of words with celebrities in the past, that is perhaps the last thing on his mind at the moment. Last week the former UFC double champion revealed he was knocked off his bike by a car whilst out cycling.

Last Friday he shared a snap of his mangled bike and a clip of himself after the accident. Explaining what happened, he wrote: "Got a bang of a car just now from behind. A sun trap, the driver couldn’t see me.

"Full spreed straight thru me. Thank you God, it wasn’t my time. Thank you wrestling and judo also. Having an awareness on the landing saved my life." The driver in question, later introduced as 'Nick', was extremely apologetic at the scene as he offered to help out McGregor, whose turquoise bike lay in a crumpled heap in the middle of the road.

"All good mate, don't worry about it," McGregor is heard replying. "That's nasty, I could have been dead there. Jesus Christ. I got away with my life there, boys." McGregor told motorist Nick that he requires a lift home, and another clip shows the 34-year-old in his car with his wrecked bike in the boot.

"We've got the bike in the back, it wasn't our time, Nick, that's all," he said. "God bless, and we're f***in' still here, thank God. That's all that matters." The Notorious one is currently preparing for a long-awaited return to the Octagon, having not fought since breaking his leg in his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021.

After almost two years out of action, McGregor appears set to return this year and has hinted he could appear as a coach on the UFC's The Ultimate Fighter reality show.
