Bryce Mitchell was brutally knocked out by Josh Emmett at UFC 296, leaving fans worried as he convulsed on the canvas in the aftermath of the blow. The fight had been promoted to the main card and Mitchell was the favourite, but the bout ended quickly when underdog Emmett showed his mettle.
Just two minutes into the fight, Emmett landed a strong right hand, which left his opponent sprawling on the floor – to clinch victory just moments after the opening bell. Commentators Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier described the scene as Mitchell, still not showing signs of recovery, began to convulse after the blow from Emmett.
The American fighter regained consciousness a few minutes later, thanks to the quick response of medics. UFC boss Dana White even rushed to the octagon before Mitchell eventually walked out slowly, with the scene leaving spectators at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas in shock.
UFC figures expressed their worries about the fighter’s health after the distressing scene in Nevada. UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman posted on Twitter/X: “That might be one of the worst KOs I’ve ever seen. I hope Bryce is ok.”
Former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling also shared his concerns on social media, saying: “HOLY F***! That is scary! Hoping Bryce is ok after that shot.”
Emmett was pleased with his performance in the octagon, especially as the win marked his comeback from a loss to Ilia Topuria in June. He declared: “I am the most powerful featherweight in the world.
“It only takes one shot,” he asserted, while referring to the knockout blow he delivered to his latest opponent in the octagon. Recognising that this was the seventh knockout of his career, he added: “I’m back baby. There was nothing stopping me from coming back in December.”

He also thanked his opponent for taking on the fight at such short notice. Indeed, Mitchell had replaced Giga Chikadze, who had withdrawn from the contest due to injury.
Emmett said: “I’m f****** back, you guys. I want to thank Bryce [Mitchell] for taking the fight. He took it on two weeks’ notice. He’s a dangerous guy, I wish him nothing but the best.”
White later confirmed Mitchell had been released from hospital having been taken straight there after his fight.
