Dustin Poirier has labelled rival Conor McGregor as “mentally weak” following his shocking victory over the Irishman on July 10.
McGregor faced long-time rival Poirier in the main-event bout at UFC 264.
While fans were expecting a close contest between the pair, which took place just 6 months after their previous fight, Poirier dominated the opening round, landing the heavier shots on the feet as well as some brutal ground-and-pound.
In the final moments of the first round, the contest would go from bad to worse for the Irishman. McGregor fired a one-two combination and after missing with his left hand, fell backwards, and appeared to snap his left ankle.
The former UFC two-weight world champion collapsed on the canvas and Poirier jumped on top to land even more ground-and-pound.
The round ended just seconds after the injury and the UFC’s doctor told referee Herb Dean that McGregor was not fit to continue fighting, meaning Poirier was victorious via doctor’s stoppage.
In the weeks following the loss, McGregor has claimed that he was dealing with a hairline fracture in his lower left leg just weeks prior to his clash with Poirier and suggested that was responsible for the injury he suffered during the fight.
The former two-weight UFC champion also stated that Dana White and the UFC were aware of the injury.

In a recent interview with famed boxing coach Teddy Atlas, Poirier was asked about McGregor’s injury claims and the Diamond didn’t hold back.
"Right off the bat, mentally, I just feel like it's weak.
"It's weak, it's excuses, but I'm trying not to read too far into it or go down these days of reading what videos are out and what people are saying, because I'm back home with my family.
“It's a win on my record. I know I did what I needed to do in the fight, pre-fight, in my training camp.”
Atlas also mentioned McGregor’s excuses following Poirier’s first victory over the Irishman at UFC 257 earlier this year. Again, the Diamond had some choice words for his rival.
“There were a lot of excuses in the last one too.
“He was getting ready to box, he wasn’t focussed on MMA, he was getting ready to fight Manny Pacquiao. You know, a lot of excuses.
“I felt like when we looked at each other in the eyes at the press conference, I thought I saw a man who was nervous.
“He was trying to convince himself that he’s the guy that he’s built himself up to be.”
