Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone has reacted to news that he will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame later this year. The announcement was made last Saturday night at UFC San Antonio.

The 39-year-old boasted an MMA record of 36-17-0 (2 NC), losing the last seven of his fights. Cerrone’s last win came all the way back in 2019 against Al Iaquinta.

Cowboy decided to retire last year after submitting to Jim Miller at UFC 276. But it has now been announced that Cerrone will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame despite having never claimed a championship.

Reacting to the news, Cerrone said he was “honoured” to be immortalised. He said: “Throughout my career, everyone says ‘Future Hall of Famer, future Hall of Famer.’ It just like rattles off, you know? It’s just words, it’s not a real thing until it’s a real thing, you know? It’s crazy. Man, I’m taken away and honoured, to be honest. I don’t really have words to express.… I had no clue my family was even here, so that was another surprise.”

Cerrone added: “Now it’s sinking in to be like, ‘Yeah, I’m in the Hall. It’s cool, it’s an honour, man. I mean, you look across any major league sport, the Hall of Famers, that’s an important thing, man.

“To be with the greats of Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, Urijah (Faber), the list goes – it’s not that big of a list, to be honest with you, in our game. To be hanging on the wall at the PI, it’s going to be cool.”

Cerrone faced just about everyone that was anyone in the lightweight division, and more than a few A-list welterweights, too, including former champions Anthony Pettis (twice), Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, Robbie Lawler, Rafael Dos Anjos (twice), Benson Henderson, Eddie Alvarez, and Charles Oliveira.

To date, Cerrone is tied for second-most wins, (23), second-most finishes, (16), most post-fight bonus awards (18), third most bouts (38), and most knockdowns (20) in UFC history. Cerrone joins greats such as Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, and Jens Pulver in the 2023 Hall of Fame class.
