Conor McGregor warned ‘only two fights remain’ if he loses to Dustin Poirier

MMA fighter Joe Duffy has warned former opponent Conor McGregor that if he loses to Dustin Poirier this weekend, he will only have two possible fights remaining in his career.

Duffy fought McGregor back in 2010 and defeated his fellow Irishman via submission in under a minute.

Despite the loss, McGregor was signed to the UFC just a few years later while Duffy had to wait an extra two years before he was snapped up by the largest MMA promotion in the world.

The pair also had very different fortunes in the UFC. While McGregor became a two-weight world champion, Duffy was never able to reach the same heights. He retired from MMA competition last year, with a 16-5 record. He had four wins and four losses in the UFC.

In a recent interview with the Sun, Duffy discussed what could be next in McGregor’s career after his upcoming bout with Poirier. It’s fair to say, Duffy isn’t optimistic.

“I think the avenue for Conor if he loses is the Nate fight or a big boxing fight, the Jake Pauls, stuff along those lines rather than a run back at the title.

"Obviously, with Conor it's not just the fight itself it's the whole build-up which makes it exciting.

"The likes of Anderson Silva, and some of the other guys, even when they started losing, they still had that aura and the fans tuned in to watch them.

"Obviously, he could go in and blast Dustin out and prove us all wrong, it wouldn't be the first time."

“I think the fight for him if he loses is Nate.

"I think that's the only fight for him unless he wants to work his way back up, but I don't know if he'd be interested in that.

"Honestly, I think that would be the best thing as he can get active again, that would be the way to go to re-spark him.

Duffy also claimed that a bout between McGregor and one of the Paul brothers would make a lot of sense. On the other hand, a rematch with Floyd Mayweather or a boxing match with Manny Pacquiao would be unlikely, according to Duffy.

“With the likes of someone like Conor and Jake Paul or his brother Logan, they have so many guys following them. So many people would tune in. The numbers would be crazy pay-per-view-wise, they can't really lose in a sense

"I think if he loses to Dustin, big boxing match-ups also go out the window."

Conor McGregor is set to meet Dustin Poirier in a trilogy bout at UFC 264 this weekend, just six months after the Irishman was defeated by the Diamond at UFC 257 via second-round knockout.

A winner of the rubber match is almost guaranteed a title shot in the UFC’s lightweight division.
