Conor McGregor responds to Max Holloway after UFC star banned
UFC: McGregor sends message to Poirier
Conor McGregor believes he thinks he’ll fight Max Holloway again in the future after it was confirmed the featherweight would not be allowed to step in this weekend if Dustin Poirier is forced out through injury.
McGregor will take on Poirier for the second time at UFC 257 this weekend, but the ‘Notorious’ already has another rematch on his mind.
Holloway, who he beat via decision in 2013 despite tearing his ACL during the bout, is the former UFC featherweight champion and fought last weekend at UFC Fight Island 7.
There had been a hope that the Hawaii-born star could act as the replacement fighter in the event of either McGregor or Poirier being withdrawn from Saturday’s main event.
But it has now been confirmed that Holloway will be slapped with a 30-day medical suspension active from his last bout, and will therefore be unable to compete.
However, McGregor doesn’t seem bothered, as he expressed he feels a rematch against Holloway is inevitable somewhere down the line.
“I thought it was a solid performance,” McGregor told The Mac Life of Holloway’s win over Calvin Kattar last week.
“He fought an up-and-comer; he done well. I was actually doing an interview and he skateboarded by the window.
“I was like, ‘Is that Max Holloway?’ He’s obviously hanging around, and fair play to him.
“He’s definitely in the pipeline for a bout against me.
“I would happily rematch Max, and after a performance like that, he’s put himself right up there.”
Holloway earned McGregor’s attention in his fight against Kattar after stopping mid-fight to shout “I’m the best boxer in the UFC” at commentator Daniel Cormier.
But ‘The Notorious’ disputed that claim, and vowed to prove he is the better puncher against Poirier.
He said: “He’s not the best boxer, It’s no question, and I’ll prove that on (Saturday). Let’s see what he says Sunday morning.”
McGregor also discussed the terms of a potential rematch against Holloway, who is still fighting at featherweight.
The Irishman won the featherweight title in 2015 and was noticeably struggling to make the 145lbs limit before moving up to lightweight.
And McGregor insisted if he were to meet Holloway again, it would have to be at lightweight.
“He’s a tall lad, he’s taller than me, so he could build up,” he continued.
“He’s only fought at 155 once. It was against Dustin.
“He was a bit out-powered, but he could certainly do it.
“Against other lightweights? You never know. But the rematch would be 155, for sure.”
