Conor McGregor dubs UFC stars ‘pound for pound wafflers’ despite explosive fight

Conor McGregor has labelled his UFC rivals Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski a bunch of wafflers despite their explosive fight.

The lightweight sluggers put on a thrilling show in their title fight held at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia. And although the fight that Makhachev won 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 had plenty of actio,  including the gaping cut Volkanovski sported above his eye delivered by the victor, McGregor wasn't amused.

And the Irishman shared his opinion on the clash when he tweeted: "Pound for pound wafflers," during the UFC 284 prelims. However, McGregor's viewpoint didn't affect the nonplussed Makhachev who roared: "You like or you don’t like, I am best [the] fighter in the world right now!", after the match.

The Dagestani destroyer previously dismissed McGregor as a worthy opponent whilst pointing to his sketchy fight record in recent times. He scoffed: "Honestly, I don’t remember when this guy beat someone. He have to come back, beat someone, and then … let’s go, why not?

"I’m gonna smash him like easy. Bobby Green is harder for me more than him." The Notorious is slated for his return to the Octagon for the first time since 2021, against Michael Chandler this summer.

But if Makhachev's previous predictions are true, McGregor will find it difficult reaching the 155lbs weight requirement for the fight due to his poor drinking habits. The Russian also believes that McGregor will never be a champion again and will only fight the likes of Nate Diaz for money.

He told ESPN: "It’s gonna be hard for him to make 155 because he drunk all days and lot of people are gonna smash him in this situation. He just gonna fight versus Nate Diaz or some old people for make some money, and that’s it.

"He’s never gonna be champion. He’s never gonna be compete this level. This guy has money, everything, but if he wants to come back, let’s do it. I will be happy to smash him.”
