UFC star Conor McGregor threw a drink at Machine Gun Kelly at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday in New York. The Irish fighter had to be separated from the rapper by security after photos surfaced of the pair staring each other down.

An uploaded video then showed McGregor and Kelly – real name Colson Baker – standing apart from each other before the former two-division champion inexplicably moves towards the musician.

Security rushed to intervene and officials attempted to diffuse the situation, with Kelly’s girlfriend Megan Fox whisked away from the scene.

TMZ reported Kelly rejected McGregor’s request for a photo which led to the rapper pushing the 33-year-old, who stumbled backward and spilt his drink – although that account of events has been refuted.

McGregor threw his drink at Kelly in retaliation, and security came between the two as the situation threatened to spiral out of control.

In the incident’s aftermath, Kelly and Fox took to the red carpet before entering the show while McGregor was also seen in the audience alongside girlfriend Dee Devlin.

McGregor was handed back his walking cane after the confrontation with Kelly as he is still recovering from a broken leg sustained during his defeat to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy bout at UFC 264 in July.

A spokesperson for McGregor said in a statement that the fighter did not ask Kelly for a picture or instigate the incident, and the only thing he knows about the rapper is that he attended the clash with Poirier.

However, McGregor addressed the scuffle with Entertainment Tonight – and declared he did not know who Kelly was.

“Nothing happened with me, I only fight real fighters, people that actually fight” McGregor said.

“I certainly don’t fight little Vanilla Ice white rappers. I don’t even know the guy. I don’t know anything about him, except that he’s with Megan Fox.”

Kelly went on to perform with famous Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker during the show, while McGregor has resided in Los Angeles to aid rehabilitation on his leg following surgery at a local hospital after the fight earlier this summer.
