Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier trade blows on social media ahead of UFC 264
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier have traded blows on social media ahead of UFC 264, with McGregor asking his opponent to "square up" and "meet him in the middle" of the Octagon.
The two fighters are locked at one win apiece ahead of their trilogy fight on July 10, with Poirier avenging his 2014 loss to McGregor courtesy of a second round TKO victory in January.
Both fighters have begun training for the blockbuster third fight later this year, although it's their mouths which have been getting plenty of exercise on social media this week.
Recalling the eight-year anniversary of his UFC debut, McGregor referenced the hard work it took to make it to the top and vowed to take the same approach against Poirier.
He tweeted: "Double skills work. I also didn’t take rest days unless I absolutely had to. Not one. Not even a Sunday. I will take this approach again for my comeback fight. I didn’t become ufc champ champ with this method but I did become ufc 145 champion. Also the cage warrior champ champ."
Poirier, nicknamed The Diamond, soon got in touch with McGregor, tweeting: "I never slack, I'll meet you in the middle of the octagon July 10th."
McGregor, who lost out in a battle of tactics the last time the two met, replied to Poirier confirming he wouldn't be letting the same thing happen again for a second time.
"Good to hear Dustin, I hope so. As last time you backed up and shot inside the first 30 seconds. I’ll be in the middle from the very go if you want it. You know that. I’ll be ready for the tactics this time too tho. See you in there."
A venue has yet to be confirmed for the trilogy fight between McGregor and Poirier, which will take place July 10.
