Ireland’s Peter Queally bloodied and beat longtime Brazilian contender Patricky “Pitbull” Freire at Bellator 258, then called for a shot at his brother, two-division world champion Patricio.

Queally took on Freire on the main card of Bellator 258 in Uncasville, Connecticut on Friday night, and exhibited calmness and composure to score effectively from range throughout their lightweight bout.

The striking exchanges were well-contested, with Freire’s punches perhaps carrying the greater power, but Queally’s shots landing with more accuracy. But the crucial moment of the fight came when the Brazilian took the Irishman to the mat.

“Pitbull” had previously taken Queally to the mat in the closing seconds of the first round, and the Brazilian adopted the same tactic at the end of Round 2 as he again shot in and took “The Showstopper” to the mat.

But, despite being taken down, Queally answered immediately with a succession of elbows to the Brazilian’s head that left him with a nasty cut that streamed blood down his face.

After inspection from the cageside physician, the bout was then waved off, giving Queally his most significant victory to date as a Bellator fighter.

“It was a lot of pain, but you know me, you need to kill me to get me out of here,” he said after the fight.

“If you think you’re going to stop me with leg kicks, you need another plan. It’s not going to happen.

“When people fight the Pitbull brothers, they’re afraid of them, and rightly so, because they’ve got tremendous power.

“But I know what you have to do with him. You can’t be afraid of these guys. You have to go after him. And this was my plan.

“I wanted to put so much pressure on him, bring the fight to him so much that he would wrestle and get tired.

“I know he’s tough enough, he could have went on into the third round. We would have had a great scrap.

“But I felt like I did a massive amount of damage. I had a mouthful of his blood in my mouth from spitting it out at the end of the second round, it was pretty wild.”

After the fight, Queally had an animated conversation with Patricky’s brother, featherweight and lightweight champion Patricio, over the legality of the fight-ending elbows, with instant replays showing each of his strikes was legitimate.

Then, in his post-fight interview, Queally called for a fight against Patricio for his lightweight title.

“Let’s me and Patricio settle this SBG-Pitbull feud now. That’s the only way to do it,” he said.

“I think he’s going to win the (featherweight) tournament against A.J. (McKee) – good luck to him – and then he should defend his belt against me, and let’s settle this once and for all.

“He has to have respected what I did to his brother there, and he doesn’t want to fight me after that, I’m going to lose respect for him.”
