WTA rankings are the official world rankings for female tennis players, and are used to determine qualification for the sport’s most prestigious tournaments. Ashleigh Barty is still the world No 1, and is closing in on Serena Williams’ record for time spent at the top, while Emma Raducanu moved up to 12th.

The WTA rankings are based on a 52-week, cumulative system, where rankings are based on points from tournaments.

For example, winning a Grand Slam competition is worth 2,000 points, while simply qualifying is worth 70 points.

Players with the most points are seeded higher for competitions – while also claiming the all-important bragging rights.

Naturally, the biggest moves tend to happen after a Grand Slam finishes – as they’re worth the most points – but there’s still plenty of chances to move up the leaderboards after ATP 250 or ATP 500 tournaments.

Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit is up to a career-high sixth place in the WTA rankings this week.

The 26-year-old won the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy last week; the only tournament taking place during the week.

Britain’s Raducanu also reached a career-high 12th place, despite not playing.

She benefitted from Elena Rybakina dropping four places to 16th.

Elsewhere, Barty maintained her position as the world’s best female tennis player.

The Australian has almost 3,000 more points than her nearest rival, Aryna Sabalenka.

She’s been at the top of the charts for 114 weeks throughout her career – the seventh all-time highest since the rankings began.

Barty still has a long way to go to beat Serena Williams’ 319 weeks at the top, however.

Coming up this week is the WTA 500 Dubai Tennis Championships, which could shake up the Top 20.

World No 2 Sabalenka is the top seed for the competition, but there are also appearances for Paula Badosa, Barbora Krejčíková, and Garbiñe Muguruza.

Muguruza is the defending champion, but Sabalenka is favourite to close the gap on Barty in the world rankings.

Barty opted to skip the Dubai tournament, instead focussing on the Indian Wells in March.
