Wimbledon viewers have Alcaraz and Rune wish as heartwarming footage emerges
Highlights from day nine at Wimbledon
Tennis fans are keen to see promising young guns Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune reform a doubles partnership from their junior years. The 20-year-old duo faced off in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Wednesday with Alcaraz coming out on top to set up a mouth-watering clash against Daniil Medvedev.
Alcaraz’s showdown with Rune was the first time two male players under the age of 21 have contested a Wimbledon quarter-final in the open era. Both sitting inside the world’s top six, many view them as the future of the sport.
But world No 1 Alcaraz justified his status as the favourite on Wednesday as he dispatched his fellow youngster in straight sets. In fact, his 7-6 6-4 6-4 triumph was sealed in less than two-and-a-half hours.
Much was made of the match-up heading into the Centre Court battle, and the storyline was supported by footage of Rune and Alcaraz playing doubles alongside one another at the tender age of 13.

It remains to be seen whether Alcaraz and Rune can keep their relationship friendly after Wednesday’s one-sided battle at the All England Club. The Spaniard is now gearing up for a heavyweight meeting with Medvedev, who downed the well-supported Christopher Eubanks to book his spot in the semis.
The Russian will have expended more energy than Alcaraz, however, as his match went an entertaining five sets and forced him to come back from 2-1 down. Ahead of Friday’s clash, Alcaraz provided his thoughts on the rangy 27-year-old.
“He’s really tall,” said the youngster. “He’s playing great here on grass. He has had a great year as well. I lost the first match we played here on grass, so I have to learn about it. But I’m going to enjoy the semi-final. I think I’m playing great, I have a lot of confidence right now. So it’s going to be a really good match I think. I’m going to enjoy it.
“He’s really complete player. I’m going to say, I think [Andrey] Rublev said a few times, he’s an octopus. He catches every ball. It is amazing. He’s an amazing athlete. I think a mix of everything. He does almost everything well.”
