Wimbledon told to refuse Roger Federer entry into All England Club by USA icon

Wimbledon: Day two wrap

Andy Roddick has jokingly suggested that Wimbledon officials shouldn’t have let Roger Federer into the All-England Club this week, just like last year. The eight-times champion received a standing ovation on Tuesday as he took his seat in the Royal Box for Andy Murray’s straight sets victory against compatriot Ryan Peniston on Centre Court.

Federer was afforded such long applause by the gallery before he eventually took his seat next to Kate Middleton to bring the mass display of appreciation to an end.

The scenes of adulation were a far cry from this time last year, however, when Federer, who had forgotten to bring his All England Club members card, couldn’t even get into the premises.

Unable to present his ID card when stopped by security officials, the 20-time Grand Slam champion was told in no uncertain terms that he could not come in, much to his astonishment.

Having learnt his lesson, Federer returned this year with his card in hand and had no such issues gaining entry. Taking to social media to make light of the situation, he posted a photograph of himself at the All-England Club with two ID cards alongside the caption: “I remembered it this time.”

Former USA No. 1 Andy Roddick, who was beaten by Federer in four Grand Slam finals, including three at Wimbledon, jokingly replied: “I still say they shouldn’t let you in.”

The usually ice-cool Swiss star recently revealed how he had lost his trademark composure when he couldn’t find his way into the courts last year, eventually telling the official about how many times he had won the tournament.

Speaking to the Daily Show, as per Sportskeeda, he said: “I was like, ‘I’m just asking you again where can I get in,’ and she said, ‘The other side, but you have to be a member.’ I look at her one last time and I’m so sorry, I couldn’t believe and still can’t believe I said this and because I still feel bad about it. I’d look at her and say, ‘I have won this tournament eight times. Please, believe me, I am a member!'”

Despite his remonstrations, the security guard followed her job to the letter and still refused entry, forcing the renowned global sports icon to use another entry gate.

“I got back in the car. My coach is like, ‘Oh good, where do we get in?’ and I’m like, ‘Don’t talk. Let’s go up and around the gate’. So, then I go out and I go around on the other side,” he added.

Federer officially retired from professional tennis on September 23 last year, exiting the sport as one of its all-time greats. But judging by the tweet from Roddick, who finished his own career with one slam – the American is possibly still having nightmares about him.
