Wimbledon steward booed by crowd after spoiling fan’s fun during Medvedev match

Highlights from day nine at Wimbledon

A Wimbledon steward made himself unpopular with a raucous crowd on No.1 Court, where Christopher Eubanks faced Daniil Medvedev for a spot in the semi-finals at SW19. The surreal incident left the steward smiling to himself long after play had resumed, with Eubanks enjoying strong support in south-west London.

Russian star Medvedev is no stranger to playing the villain, and it was a role he was forced to assume on Wednesday as the primarily British crowd cheered for Eubanks. The American underdog is in the midst of a dream run at the All England Club, having never previously made it beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.

Although he lost the first set, the 27-year-old stormed through the second 6-1 to rev up those inside No.1 Court. The crowd were therefore already in the habit of being vocal by the time a steward ruined one fan’s fun.

The onlooker in question was in the right place when a ball was fired into the stands, although their hopes of taking the souvenir home were left in tatters when the steward forced them to hand it over so that he could throw it back down onto the court.

The crowd weren’t happy, peppering the steward with boos as he made a playful gesture during his big moment. Noisy support under the roof was used frequently by Eubanks as he looked to boost his energy reserves for the hard-fought contest.

Hand gestures to up the volume were met by huge cheers, although Medvedev retaliated with hand gestures of his own after one particular rally saw him stump Eubanks with a fantastic shot.
