Wimbledon star shows he’s rolling in the money after playful Ikea bag joke

Highlights from day 4 at Wimbledon

Wimbledon star Holger Rune has come a long way since using an Ikea holdall at the US Open in 2021. Rune hilariously brought up the flashback on social media after Jannik Sinner made his Wimbledon debut by emerging in a vastly contrasting fashion.

Sinner walked out for his first-round clash against Juan Manuel Cerundolo carrying a Gucci bag. The holdall sells online for around £1,700 but the Italian claims it is “personalised”, meaning it may have set him back even more.

It was a much different entrance to the one made by a fresh-faced Rune in 2021, who walked out with a blue Ikea bag that can be purchased in-store for a mere 75p. The Danish ace iconically entered the Arthur Ashe court at the US Open ready to face Novak Djokovic.

Rune referenced the contrasting fashion styles in an amusing Instagram post. Sharing a fan’s story on the social media platform which compared Rune’s Ikea bag to Sinner’s Gucci accessory, the 20-year-old created a poll for his followers to vote for which they preferred.

An 18-year-old Rune was beaten 7-6 6-3 6-2 by Djokovic at Flushing Meadows, earning praise from the 23-time Grand Slam champion. But it was his choice of bag that caught most of the attention.

Quizzed on his Ikea holdall at the time, Rune said: “I think it’s a nice bag. I can have all my drinks there and bananas. It just suits me well to go on court.”

Rune’s career has taken an impressive trajectory since then, and there is no need for penny-pinching with his selection of accessories. The ATP website says he has made a whopping £4.67million (€5.47m) in total career earnings, taking into account his singles and doubles career.

A third-round tie means Rune is guaranteed £131,000 from this year’s Championships. Entering the fourth round would earn him £207,000.

He is currently ranked at number six in the world rankings and has cruised into the third round at Wimbledon thanks to wins over Brit George Loffhagen and Roberto Carballes Baena. The 20-year-old has never gone past round three at Wimbledon and will hope to do so this year.

Despite that, Rune has still not quite reached Sinner’s level of walking around with a Gucci bag. Instead, he has been seen navigating the All England Club complex with a Babolat holdall containing his equipment, drinks and food.

Meanwhile, Rune has prompted debate after suggesting a drastic rule change. He admitted that the one intervention he would make in tennis’s laws would be to remove the ‘advantage’ point at deuce, meaning the player who wins the next point after 40-40 automatically wins the game.
