Wimbledon finalist weighs in on new underwear rule as women players split
Karolina Pliskova has given her thoughts after Wimbledon introduced a new rule allowing players to wear dark undershorts in an effort to relieve players’ anxiety. It came after some of the Czech star’s rivals were previously forced to skip their periods during the tournament. But the 2021 Wimbledon finalist has joined Ons Jabeur in saying she won’t be wearing them despite the rule change.
Wimbledon previously announced that the all-white clothing rule would be relaxed for this year’s Championships, allowing female players to “wear mid/dark-coloured undershorts if they choose to.” It came after players like Daria Saville expressed concern over the old rule, as the Australian would even skip her period as a result.
While the new rule comes as a welcome relief to many, some players have already admitted that they won’t be taking the opportunity to wear the dark undershorts. “I was never worried about this,” Pliskova said of the previous all-white requirement.
The former world No 1 did agree that it would help those who had been concerned, however. “But I’m not going to wear black shorts,” she added.

“I think some girls maybe they had this issue so I think, yeah, it can be good for them, for the girls which they were struggling a little bit with this or they had a stress from it. I think it can help.”
It comes after another Wimbledon finalist – Jabeur – also said she wouldn’t be wearing dark undershorts if she was allowed. But the world No 6 had a separate concern that was stopping her.
Speaking to a small group of reporters in Eastbourne, Jabeur said: “There is two things. One thing, it’s better definitely not to be paranoid. And the other thing, everybody will know that you have your period.

“So I’m not sure which part of it is good. I think I don’t think I’m going to wear anything. If all the girls will wear it, I think it will make it better. But I think it’s a great thing that Wimbledon is trying to help women feel more comfortable on the court.”
While Pliskova and Jabeur will be sticking to the white undershorts it seems there will be plenty of others who embrace the chance to wear darker ones. Former world No 20 Saville has just returned from injury and was one of the players most affected by the old rule.
“It’s true, I myself had to skip my period around Wimbledon for the reason that I didn’t want to worry about bleeding through. We already have enough stress,” she previously told The Daily Aus.
Meanwhile, Pat Cash previously told BBC Radio 5 Live that the rule had left some female players forced to play braless. He said: “Some of the girls have been told to go back and change their bras and tops because they had slight colour on them.
“I believe some of the girls didn’t have suitable sports bras and had to go without them. It has absolutely gone ridiculous.”
