What does Roger Federer think about Nick Kyrgios?
Nick Kyrgios faces Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s Wimbledon 2022 final – but what does tennis legend Roger Federer think about the controversial Australian?
World No.40 Kyrgios is enjoying his best-ever run at a Grand Slam and has reached his first final, where he faces six-time champion Djokovic, with the Serbian looking to add a fourth-straight trophy at SW19 to his 20 major titles.
Kyrgios has played some exceptional tennis during the Championships but has also made headlines for all the wrong reasons with several arguments with umpires and line judges, falling out with players and spitting towards the crowd.
The 27-year-old is also facing an assault charge for an incident involving his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari which allegedly occurred in December 2021.
Kyrgios has received some support amid the allegations with Ajla Tomljanovic, a fellow tennis star and another one of his ex-girlfriends, saying she ‘didn’t have that experience with him’ and his brother Christos calling out ‘haters and liars’.
Federer, meanwhile, has always been a big fan of Kyrgios, labelling him a ‘great player’ after their meeting at the Miami Open in 2017 and in early 2018 the 40-year-old Swiss hero admitted he was ‘excited to see what’s next for Nick’.
Later that year, Federer lauded Kyrgios once again, saying: ‘I’m a fan, really. He plays very relaxedly, just like me when I was young.
‘It’s good to have guys like him on the tour. With him it’s more about being focused to motivate himself again, doing the same on every point.’
Federer has also previously stated: ‘[Kyrgios] likes the big stage. He’s got nothing to lose, no fear, and he’s got a great game.
‘He can rely on his serve so much. It keeps him in the match regardless of how he plays from the baseline.’
Federer is absent from Wimbledon this year through injury, missing his first Championships since 1998.
