Unusual patch Djokovic uses that turns him into ‘Iron Man’ explained

Novak Djokovic jokes about his age at the Australian Open

Novak Djokovic was seen sporting an unusual coin-shaped patch underneath his shirt at Rolland Garros on Wednesday that left tennis fans scratching their heads. Theories had floated around as to what the object was but it has now been revealed to be a nanotechnology device used to boost sports performance.

Djokovic flashed the device while changing his top in the middle of his third-round French Open triumph against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. He was also seen receiving a similar circular object and changing it over later in the match.

Former world No1 Jim Courier, who was commentating on the match for the Tennis Channel, noticed the device and compared it to the Arc reactor worn by Marvel comic-book character Iron Man. “Something is taped to Novak,” he said.

“Have you ever seen Robert Downey Jr. (plays Tony Stark in Iron Man) in the same room as Djokovic? Maybe Novak is Iron Man?”

When asked about the pin in his post-match press conference following his 7-6 6-0 6-3 win, Djokovic replied: “When I was a kid I liked Iron Man a lot, so I try to impersonate Iron Man.

“You know, my team delivers an incredibly efficient nanotechnology to help me deliver my best on the court, so that’s the biggest secret of my career. If it wasn’t for that, I probably wouldn’t be sitting here.”

It was later revealed that Djokovic was wearing a TaoPatch, a patented wearable nanotechnology device that combines acupuncture with light therapy. The company claim its device provides athletes with “greater coordination, smoother movements and a saving of valuable resources during their competition and training.”

TaoPatch tweeted: “Djokovic uses Taopatch® SPORT nanotechnology! Taopatch®  SPORT nourishes the body with wavelengths of therapeutic light, without side effects or the release of any chemicals. Wearable every day, it’s activated by sunlight and body heat ensuring treatments of 720 hours each month.”
