Serena Williams shared a message that fellow tennis star Grigor Dimitrov sent her from Cincinnati in her absence. The 23-time Grand Slam champion is skipping next week’s Western & Southern Open as she continues to recover from an injury that forced her to retire during her opening Wimbledon match. She dubbed the former ATP Finals champion her “bestie” as she shared a video from Dimitrov to her Instagram story.

Williams is hoping to be ready for the upcoming US Open after having her Wimbledon run cut very short when she slipped on the grass in her first round match and retired after just six games.

She had already withdrawn from the WTA 1000 event in Montreal when she announced she would also not be participating in Cincinnati.

“Unfortunately, I will not be playing in the Western & Southern Open next week as I am still in recovery from my leg injury at Wimbledon,” the two-time champion at the tornament said.

“I will miss all of my fans in Cincinnati whom I look forward to seeing every summer. I plan to be back on the court very soon.”

Although she’s not in the Ohio city for the upcoming tournament, she certainly hasn’t been forgotten as Grigor Dimitrov sent her a message from the grounds.

Williams shared a video that the former world No 3 had sent her to her Instagram story.

“So I’m doing this press over here, I had to write a complimentary paper to someone from the WTA so I figured you because I love your style so much, and here it goes,” the Bulgarian tennis ace said.

He then held up his handwritten note to the camera, before adding: “Have a wonderful day.”

The 30-year-old Bulgarian has had his share of success on the tennis court too, having previously achieved a career high No 3 ranking.

He won Cincinnati back in 2017, his first and only Masters trophy, and followed up the win by taking the ATP Finals crown at the end of the season, his biggest title to date.

Meanwhile, Williams, a two-time former champion at the event herself, crashed out of the tournament early when it was held in New York as a one-off last year.

She lost her second match to Maria Sakkari from a set up, as the Greek overcame her 5-7 7-6(5) 6-1, but the woman often seen as the GOAT was able to storm back and make the semi-finals of the US Open a week later, defeating Sakkari en route.
