Roger Federer’s insane earnings as Swiss trumps Lewis Hamilton, Woods and Neymar

Roger Federer discusses his retirement in September

Roger Federer is still the highest-paid athlete from the world of tennis despite retiring from the sport last year, with the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Tiger Woods and Neymar all lagging behind the Swiss hero in terms of earnings over the past year. Federer has not played a competitive match in over a year but the 20-time Grand Slam winner was still able to collect a bigger paycheque than Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Federer has not played competitively since deciding to step away from professional tennis in September at the Laver Cup following a string of surgeries.

Yet the 41-year-old still has the highest off-field earnings of any athlete in the world, according to Forbes data collected between May 2022 and May 2023.

His sponsorship deals mean that Federer’s total income of £76.3millions ($95m) puts him inside the top 10 highest-earning sports stars, without even lifting a finger as endorsements his alone were responsible for all of the money – aside from the £80,000 ($100k) earned from his time on the court.

That dwarves even the figures made by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the top-earning athlete in the world ahead of Lionel Messi in 2022. He raked in a total of £109.3m ($136m), putting daylight between himself and his Ballon d’Or rival Messi on £104.5m, after moving to Saudi Arabia in November.

The 38-year-old now earns an eye-watering £170m-a-year with Al-Nassr after penning a two-year contract – making him the highest-paid footballer in history by a huge margin.

But the £72.3m earned by the Portuguese superstar away from his weekly salary was some way short of Federer’s windfall, which surely makes him one of the most marketable faces in the world of sport.

Federer also took home more than PSG and Brazil star Neymar, who was 12th on the overall list with £68m earned in the same time period. Surprisingly, Hamilton added £52m to his bank account in the 12 months from May 1, with the Mercedes star’s deals with Tommy Hilfiger paling in comparison to Federer’s shoe deal that has earned him £440m over the space of a decade.

He remains F1’s highest-paid star on £40m-a-season, but the seven-time champion efforts to drum up further income away from the track have surprisingly been less successful than some might have imagined. Golf icon Tiger Woods – who was placed lower than Rory McIlroy – collected a cool £60.2m.

What Federer and Woods do have in common that younger athletes like Hamilton and Neymar still aspire to is joining the exclusive club of sports-made billionaires. Ronaldo and Messi are set to join them, and it may not be too long before Hamilton and Neymar join the likes of Federer as one of the top revenue-makers.
