Roger Federer fans have seemingly cashed in on the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s retirement with his iconic ‘RF’ logo cap being sold for 10 times the retail price at The O2. At most tennis events, ‘RF’ caps are a regular feature among the crowd in a number of different colours.
That’s been the case at the 2022 Laver Cup too with a special edition hat quickly selling out earlier in the week. The merchandise stores held a small number of black ‘RF’ hats that had Laver Cup written on the side.
With Federer announcing the tournament this week would be his last before retirement, fans descended on the capital to grab what merchandise they could. Retailing at £36, fans quickly snapped up the hats before they sold out with fans now turning to eBay to make a huge profit on their initial investment.
There have already been some sold for £300 and £250 with more up for sale at closer to £400. One fan outside The O2 wearing the in-demand cap was seemingly unaware of the price it now fetches.
Walking outside the arena, the American lady was gobsmacked when told the hat she was wearing had been sold for nearly 10 times what she had paid for it. Other bits of merchandise have also quickly sold out such as the Team Europe Laver Cup blue zipped jacket.
They too have seen a huge markup in price with one selling for £733 on eBay. Ticket prices for the Laver Cup also skyrocketed after Federer announced his impending retirement last week.
Google trends showed a 4020 per cent spike in demand for tickets, according to aceodds.com. Some of the most expensive seats were originally valued at £510 but resale sites were soon putting tickets up for a ridiculous £45,000 each.
The cheapest tickets were on sale for a minimum of £900 from the original sale when they were initially available for just £40. Federer’s last match came on Friday night with every seat inside The O2 filled and he was given a standing ovation at the end in an emotional farewell.
The 41-year-old gave a moving interview on court where he struggled to hold back the tears. Even his fellow players failed to control their emotions with both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic crying.
