Piers Morgan lashes out at ‘wokies’ amid criticism over Emma Raducanu U-turn
Piers Morgan has never been one to hold back on social media – and now the divisive former Good Morning Britain presenter has ranted at tennis fans accusing him of a U-turn over Emma Raducanu.
The British teenager has been a revelation in this year's US Open, with her stunning win over Olympic champion Belinda Bencic making her the first qualifier in history to reach the semi-finals. If she prevails against Maria Sakkari, she'll become the first British woman to contest a final at Flushing Meadows since Virginia Wade in 1968.
Remarkably, it's only the 18-year-old's second Grand Slam, after she reached the last 16 of Wimbledon this summer before retiring from her match with Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia, citing breathing difficulties.
That withdrawal prompted a scathing assessment from Morgan, 56, who tweeted: "Ms Raducanu’s a talented player but couldn’t handle the pressure and quit when she was losing badly. Not ‘brave’, just a shame."
Typically, Morgan doubled down despite being widely challenged on his stance, only to now wax lyrical about her efforts in New York.
"She's on fire again," he posted, during her straight sets win over Bencic. "Destroying another higher ranked player in the US Open. Emma Raducanu is the real deal – a tennis superstar in the making. So exciting to watch."
The tweet drew in more than 3,400 likes but some were quick to accuse Morgan of hypocrisy.
"Weren't you slagging her off at Wimbledon? Pipe down" responded one fan, while another said: "Until she loses and then you start bashing on here."
Morgan, who controversially left his job as co-host of Good Morning Britain in March, promptly ranted back at the "losers."
He said: "Very disappointing to see wokies going crazy because Emma Raducanu is now winning not quitting.
"This must be so triggering to losers who are used to you celebrating their failures. Please stop."
He didn't stop there, responding to one fan who praised the teenager for learning from her experience at SW19.
"Yes, absolutely," wrote Morgan. "To be fair to Emma Raducanu she totally agreed with me and (John) McEnroe that she didn't handle the pressure at Wimbledon. No whining, no excuses. Brilliant to see her storm back better and mentally stronger – that's what champions do."
Morgan of course, loves nothing more than an ongoing Twitter debate and is unlikely to stay quiet as Raducanu bids to keep her dream run going.
Her clash with Greek player Sakkari, 26, will take place in the early hours of Friday morning.
