Novak Djokovic battled back against unseeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti to avoid a shock third round loss at the French Open. The victory has sent a warning to tournament favourite Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic led 6-7 6-7 6-1 6-0 4-0 before the Italian retired and will play Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The 2016 French Open champion is one of only two players in history to have beaten the Spaniard at Roland Garros and is seen as his main threat to reach the final.

Of course, Nadal has plenty of obstacles to overcome if he is to win a men’s record 21’st Grand Slam but the world No 1 is undoubtably his biggest threat.

When the Serb fell down sets to love, Nadal would have been licking his lips at the prospect of losing his main rival.

But Djokovic’s brilliant fightback will no doubt have disappointed the Spanish great who faces Jannik Sinner for a place in the quarterfinals.
